Reading testing and groups - notes from Meet the Teacher BBQ

Developing groups
• At the NE level, sometimes further up in the juniors, groups can be determined by the children’s alphabet and word knowledge as they are not yet readers.
• As children begin to read their grouping is determined by running record results and their performance in the reading group. As the children progress they may change groups or the group may stay the same.
Frequency of testing
• Each child is tested within the first 2-3 weeks of the school year.
• School wide data is gathered at the end of each term.
• Teachers test children approximately twice a term unless their performance indicates a need for earlier testing or the child feels he/she has made significant progress and asks to be tested. The changes occur as needed.
Other
• Easy home readers
• Helping children at home
• Supporting learner
